What to see:

You’ll see Castell de Llívia, although little more than its medieval walls remain at the top of Puig del Castell—at the foot of which modern-day Llívia was built.
It would originally have been a rock castle with a simple structure that made the most of the lay of the land. It was renovated in the 13th century due to the consolidation of a military frontier with the kingdom of France. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the castle was the main fortification of the county of Cerdanya. But in 1478, the castle was besieged for 14 months, after which it surrendered. Once the fortress was conquered, Louis XI ordered its demolition in 1479. Some minor reconstruction work was carried out and it was garrisoned from time to time. But it wasn’t until 2013 when the restoration of the castle was inaugurated.

Historical facts aside, this 1,353 m tall hill covered with pastures and pine forests juts out of the Cerdanya basin. From here, you’ll get the best possible views of the town of Llívia and, in addition, breathtaking panoramic views of the Cerdanya valley floor, which starts from the south to the mountains of Puigmal, Tosa d’Alp, Moixeró and Cadí a little to the right, the Puigpedrós sector to your right, and the mountains of Carlit Massif a bit closer.

Given Llívia’s geographical features, an interesting fact about it is that the area surrounding it is entirely French, since the municipality is a Spanish exclave smack in the middle of France.
