Segre Birdwatching Route
The Cerdanya plain in general, and the municipality of Ger in particular, preserve some of the best conserved riverside forests in our country, both because of the breadth of the forested area, the diversity of its animal and plant communities, and the size of the trees found here. For all these reasons, you are in the Natural Interest Area of the Upper Segre Riverbanks. This area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of sites with high ecological value. Segre Birdwatching Route
One of the faunal groups in these riverside environments with the greatest variety of species is birds. This is evidenced by the 101 species recorded here to date. Some are present always or frequently, while others appear only occasionally. Here we find everything from large birds of prey to waterbirds, as well as forest species.
Length: 1.1 km (round trip).
Type: circular, running parallel to the river and marked with directional signs. It can be shortened by half by crossing a small wooden bridge.
Starting point: Torrent de Montmalús (42.398905113225865, 1.85938633433318)
Accessibility: flat, but only accessible in the final section (you must cross the Ger River, park afterwards and move along a fairly smooth forest track with a few potholes).
Content: Along the route you will find 6 panels showing drawings of five species, their name, abundance, time of year, a distinctive feature, and a QR code to listen to their song. The panels correspond to birds that live close to humans (anthropophilic), aquatic species, birds seen only during the breeding season (summer visitors), forest-dwelling birds (climbers), those that are present only in winter (wintering species), and birds of prey.
Best time: late winter and early spring, when there are not many leaves, wintering species are still present, and the first migrants arrive. Binoculars are highly recommended.
Behaviour rules: do not litter, do not pick plants, respect wildlife; if accompanied by a dog, keep it on a leash and maintain a discreet, low-impact attitude.
