The 220 species that make up Cerdanya’s current ornithological catalogue represent nearly half of all the species that can be observed in Catalonia. Within a short distance, we find species typical of very different habitats—for example, the rock ptarmigan and the wallcreeper on the highest south-facing peaks; the western subalpine warbler and the ortolan bunting in the Mediterranean scrublands near the valley floor; the stone-curlew and the yellow wagtail in the finest fields of the plain; or the boreal owl and the capercaillie in the most mature subalpine forests on the north-facing slopes, among many others. Not to forget the thousands of migratory birds that cross our skies during their journeys. Indeed, one of the most fascinating bird migration routes in the Pyrenees passes through Cerdanya. Fascination… that is exactly what birdwatching will inspire in you when you visit our region.
